The Power of Story

How Mothers Shape Legacy Through the Stories They Tell

Scripture: "I will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done." - Psalm 78:4

Devotional Word:

Mama, you are both a storyteller and a story being written.

Every night when you tuck your little ones into bed, you have the opportunity to shape their understanding of the world through the stories you tell. But it's not just the bedtime tales that matter – it's the story of your family, your faith, your values, and your love that creates the most lasting impact.

Your children are collecting stories about who they are and where they come from. They're watching the story of your life unfold and learning what it means to be brave, kind, faithful, and strong. The story they see you living becomes part of the story they'll tell about themselves.

When you tell them about their grandparents' courage, you're giving them roots. When you share about times God provided for your family, you're building their faith. When you recount funny memories and sweet moments, you're creating a sense of belonging and identity that will anchor them throughout their lives.

But here's what's equally powerful: you're also teaching them to be storytellers themselves. You're showing them that life is meant to be remembered, celebrated, and shared. You're creating a family culture where stories matter, where history is honored, and where each person's chapter adds to the beautiful narrative being written.

Your children will someday tell their own children stories about you. They'll remember not just what you said, but how you made them feel, what you valued, and how you loved. The story you're living today becomes the legacy story they'll carry forward.

What kind of story are you writing with your life? What stories are you intentionally passing down? Your daily choices, your responses to challenges, your celebrations of joys – these all become part of the family narrative that will be told for generations.

Today's Reflection: What stories from your family history do you want your children to know? What story is your current life telling, and how do you want to shape it moving forward?

Prayer: God, help me be intentional about the stories I tell and the story I live. Give me wisdom to share our family history in ways that build identity and faith in my children. Help me live a story that honors You and creates a legacy my children will be proud to continue. Amen.
